How does inner shell shielding affect the atomic radii of atoms?

The inner shells basically block the positive charge of the nucleus from attracting the valence electrons. This decreases the attraction that the valence electrons experience and so they are further from the nucleus when there is more shielding, leading to greater atomic radii.

Also, more shielding usually means more energy levels = bigger atom.
